About Aya Kawabata
An artist and designer working across cultural contexts, translating musical principles—such as rhythm, structure, and temporality—into material and spatial forms. With a background in classical music and formal training in violin, her practice approaches tradition as an evolving system shaped across time and geography.
She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and is currently based in Tokyo, following the establishment of her studio in New York. Shaped by experiences across the United States, Europe, and India, her work is informed by a cross-cultural perspective.
Her recent work focuses on developing new bodies of work rooted in traditional Egyptian techniques, exploring the relationship between local craftsmanship and contemporary design. She has participated in international residencies and exhibitions, including Alcova in Milan.
Past/Current clients include Intel, Dutch inverturals, Alfalfa studio NYC, IKEA, Levi's studium, They Might Be Giants, and Tunica Magazine etc.
Aya is currently available for select freelance and collaboration projects.

音楽、デザイン、そして素材文化の感性を架橋するアーティスト・デザイナー。
幼少期よりヴァイオリンを専門的に学び、音楽的なリズムや構造、響きへの深い感覚を培う。大学院では副専攻として建築を学び、空間や構造的な図形への関心をさらに深めた。これらの経験は、造形や空間構成における「音楽的構造と建築的思考」の融合として結実している。
Cranbrook Academy of Art 芸術大学院修了。
欧米で活動し、ニューヨークに自身のデザインスタジオを設立。
領域横断的なアプローチが高く評価され、ドイツ国際デザインフェア（DMY）にて日本人として初の大賞を受賞。
また、プラダのクリエイティブ・ディレクターであるラフ・シモンズ氏とともに、ヨーロッパの美術館展示に参加するなど、海外を中心に評価を重ねてきた。
2025年には、ミラノ・サローネ「Alcova」に唯一の日本人として招待枠で参加。
発表作品は Wallpaper Magazine をはじめとする欧米メディアで紹介され、ギャラリストやキュレーターから高い評価を得た。
これまでに Design Anthology Award をはじめとする複数の国際デザイン賞を受賞。
Shakti Design Residency では世界応募の中からトップ5デザイナーの一人として選出された実績を持つ。
作品は Vogue UK、The New York Times、AIGA、Dezeen などで紹介され、
パリ、ロンドン、ミラノ、ニューヨークなど十数か国で発表されている。
テキスタイル作品は Cranbrook Art Museum やオランダの Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam など美術館の永久保存候補作品としても選出されるなど、
海外のギャラリストやコレクターから高い評価を受けている。
また、ビジュアルデザイナーとして、Intel、Baciocchi Associati、NYCx DESIGN などのアートディレクションおよびグラフィックデザインを手がけている。
現在は東京を拠点に、伝統工芸を現代的な視点で再解釈する国際的・学際的プロジェクトを展開中。
日本国内で作品を目にする機会は限られているが、本年度の DesignArt Tokyo は、日本での初めてのデザイン展示参加となる。
今秋には、エジプトの伝統工芸技法を用いた最新作を、フランス・ニースにて発表。
武蔵野美術大学特別講師、沖縄県立芸術大学非常勤講師。
